The 2022 Akron ACT-SO program is proud to partner with the Summit Suffrage Centennial Committee to celebrate the enduring life and legacy of Sojourner Truth with the inaugural Akron ACT-SO Sojourner Truth Legacy Showcase.
This creative showcase is a precursor to the widely anticipated dedication of the Sojourner Truth Statue Project, scheduled for fall 2022, in Akron, Ohio. The dedication is an historical tribute to the bold and courageous "Ain't I A Woman" speech that Ms. Truth delivered during the 1851 Women's Rights Convention in Akron, Ohio, on May 29, 1851. Her words were a sharp rebuke of the mistreatment of women color and the white suffrage movement that purposely excluded women of color. Her life and words still serve as a battle cry for countless women of color and marginalized communities advocating for voting rights and social justice across the nation.
All Summit County middle school and high school students are invited to submit their modern interpretation of Sojourner Truth's "Ain't I A Woman" speech, through the lens of an ACT-SO leader. Students will select from the five ACT-SO competition categories for their submission. When capturing the spirit of Sojourner Truth in the 21st century, students are encouraged to be bold, courageous, and inventive. Submissions will be displayed throughout Women's History Month in March 2022. Entries will also be featured at the Sojourner Truth Statue dedication in the fall.
The Sojourner Truth Legacy Showcase will run in conjunction with the 2022 Akron ACT-SO program.
High school students may use their showcase submission for their Akron ACT-SO submission, if it meets all of the ACT-SO competition guidelines.
